About the Item

For sale is an unusual Edwardian Hand Pulled Milk Cart with royal charter, dating to the early 20th century. The top of the cart has a sign saying 1448 London Rd Norbury. Below this the top of the cart is fitted to accommodate for several ample milk bottles. The inside of the cart is fitted for either small milk churns or further bottles. At the bottom of the cart there is a small hatch, which may have been used to carry money, and change etc. The cart is in its original condition, with all of its original decoration, paintwork, etc. Please study the photographs. The cart also shows the royal coat of arms. This is a rare opportunity to buy a piece of English History. Originally the cart belonged to Lord Rayleigh Farms, which at the time owned over 8.000 acres of Farmland in Essex and Suffolk. They evidently supplied milk to the people of London, including the royal household. These are great collectible pieces which are suitable for decorating either the home or commercial premises. Width: 60" depth: 42" height: 67" When the great agricultural depression of the 1880s came, ruining many tenant farmers and causing them to abandon their farms it was physicist John Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh at the helm. Fortuitously, his younger brother, Edward Strutt, was a keen farmer and countryman, so in partnership with his brother they took the land in hand and farmed it under the name of Lord Rayleigh’s Farms. Edward Strutt was an outstandingly successful farmer and businessman; the secret of his success was establishing the mixed (arable and dairy) farming system. All costs, including the cows’ feed to individual milk yields were meticulously recorded to enable informed management decision making, and implement economies. His success at Terling soon came to the notice of other landowners, who asked him to manage their land.
