About

Along with Gio Ponti, Carlo Mollino, and Piero Fornasetti, experimental furniture designer Aldo Tura emerged in the 1930s with elegant designs, often capricious and exaggerated in form and all carefully crafted from the finest materials imaginable--bronze, parchment, delicate eggshell marquetry, and veneers of fine woods. By the 1950s, from his workshop in Lombardy in the north of Italy, Tura had begun to hand paint his furnishings with architectural facades, Venetian landscapes, and even costumed characters, this trompe-l'oeil further adorning the surfaces of his already exquisite pieces before the final brass and bronze detailing was added.

This service cart is a wonderful example of Tura's contribution to the Italian design of the mid-twentieth century. The angular lines of the trays covered in glass contrast with the curve of the cart's handles that become the silhouettes of two swans. The cart is lined with goatskin parchment and detailed with beautifully forged pieces of brass and bronze. As a whole, the piece comes across as almost simple--but at the same time, when examined in detail, it is also extravagant. A wonderful work, signed and in perfect condition.
