About the Item

This Rare Jamaican Art Deco. Round, Four Door Mahogany Bar / Cocktail Cabinet was designed and handmade by Burnett Webster (1909–1992) in Kingston, Jamaica. The Jamaican Art Deco Cocktail Cabinet is constructed using spectacularly figured solid Mahogany typical of the best work of Burnett Webster. The mahogany round cabinet is supported on four hand-carved shaped floating feet with hidden period casters, and is subdivided into quadrant shelved compartments. The entire top tier is conveniently visible through the glass top serving surface. The Deco Bar compartment is readily accessed through the four individual curved doors boasting elongated hexagonal Brass and Ebony Pulls. The interior of each compartment is divided with a shelf which helps to showcasing the particularly fine wood graining of the upper interior. Being finished all around, the West Indian Bar is well suited to freestanding use between a pair of chairs or in the center of a living room. Being mobile, the Caribbean Cocktail Cabinet can be stored to the side and conveniently moved for Cocktail Service. Burnett Webster (1909-92) was an important Art Deco designer from Jamaica, whose talents, designs, and contribution to “Modernism” are only currently being internationally recognized (see “The Magazine Antiques” Jan/Feb 2023 pgs.86-95). He had been previously acclaimed in Jamaica, most recently at the National Gallery’s 1999 Art Deco exhibition named in his honor.
