About the Item
A superb mid 20th century Italian two-tier side table on wheels, designed by Ignazio Gardella. This striking gold and black piece, whether used as a small table or slender trolley, clearly reflects the space-age influence of the 1950s and 60s. A versatile addition to any room acting as both a functional piece and decorative accent in a well-appointed interior.
Ignazio Gardella (1905–1999) was one of Italy’s most respected modernist architects and designers, whose work spanned much of the 20th century. Trained as both an engineer and architect, Gardella became known for his ability to combine rational, functional design with refined, sometimes unexpected decorative elements. While much of his architectural work was grounded in clean modernist lines, he frequently adapted his approach to suit the character of each project. In furniture and lighting design, Gardella’s pieces often reflect the sleek, optimistic spirit of the post-war Italian design boom, with influences from both the machine age and the playful experimentation of the 1950s and 60s. His work remains sought after for its craftsmanship, distinctive forms, and understated sophistication.
