Mid-Century Modern Bar in Hardwood by Liceu De Artes E Oficios, 1960s, Brazil

About the Item

Available today, this Brazilian Modern Bar or Cabinet made in Hardwood and white formica by Liceu de Artes e Oficios in the sixties is nothing less than spectacular! The piece is entirely made of Brazilian hardwood with white formica and brass finishes. It contains three doors and two large compartments. The bottom compartment has the original mirror in the back adding a depth and old glamor to the piece. The structure rests on top of four hardwood legs. The piece can be used as a bar but also as a cabinet. Besides the white formica that was replaced, the entire piece is original. The wood has been refinished and reveals stunning veins. The brass finishes are delicate and are in excellent condition. The manufacture seal in the back. There are small holes in the back, probably alterations for passing cables. The holes can’t be seen from the inside. The last images showcase the piece in its original condition when it was used as a bar. A piece like this could flex into any Mid-Century Modern, Modern, Contemporary environment. This piece would also look wonderful in a boho chic, or Hollywood Regency style home as well. Size: H52.8, W27.6, D11.8 (in) H134, W70, D30 (cm) The piece was designed and executed by the Liceu De Artes & Oficios, an institution founded in 1873 by a group of elite coffee aristocrats that pretended to train skilled labor for possible future industrialization of Brazil. During these golden years of production many sofas, armchairs, credenzas by many Brazilian young designers were manufactured and commercialized by Liceu de Artes e Oficios. Lucio Costa, the Brazilian urban planner, and architect best known for his plan for Brasilia taught and led the design department from 1938 to 1954.
