About the Item

This ensemble of the French rattan furniture Manufacturer Perret & Vibert perfectly embodies the aesthetics of the winter gardens of the late 19th century. Resting on four legs with an X-shaped spacer, these armchairs with their square seats are decorated in a geometric water green color. This seems to follow a movement from the lower left corner to the upper right corner, like the gushing of a clear water source. A detail that underlines the importance of natural elements in garden rooms. This nuance can be found on the openwork backrest made of stems in alternating colors. A perfect match with the warm, honey-like color of natural rattan. The set is completed by two chairs and two stools ornamented in the same decorative program, allowing the creation of a real space around this table. The table is rectangular, originally designed for breakfasts or tea-times, but it can also accommodate two to four place settings thanks to its sufficiently high and wide top. The refinement and finesse of execution of this ensemble plunge us into the hushed universe of the glass canopies of the large aristocratic residences, circa 1870. The Maison des Bambous was founded by Ernest Vibert and Robert Perret in 1872. From its beginnings, it offered a variety of objects in the Chinese taste as well as many pieces of furniture, chairs and tables made of bamboo and woven rush. At the beginning of the 1890s, the company turned towards the Asian antiques trade, but they were mainly known for their creations in rattan, which were as suitable for winter gardens in the city as for country houses or seaside villas. The company regularly won awards for its designs, notably at the Moscow International Exhibition in 1891 and at the Paris Horticultural Competition in 1893. The company's reputation is also due to its clientele: the Grand Hôtel, the Athénée, the Impérial and the Café de la Paix offered exceptional showcases in the heart of the capital. The Royal Family of England and Empress Eugenie were also among their most prestigious clients.
