Antique Continental Paint Decorated Octagonal Tilt Top Tavern Table, Dated, 1706
About the Item
A fascinating and early Painted Table with great form and good color. The octagonal top made in four planks. The fully carved base and supports with foliate scrolls. The tripod base with two square ribbed legs joined with a carved stretcher and one gate leg, all with lower balusters with turnip feet. The top decorated with a center oval with the scene of a king and his courtiers, and date 1706. With a wide painted floral surround. The underside of the top decorated with a scene of a figure in red making a burnt sacrifice at an altar as an angel stands by. Along with a worn inscription and painted surrounding flowers.

Condition: There are, as expected, signs of great age with the table being time-softened and well worn overall with some chipped edges and losses underneath however retaining an extraordinary presentation.
