Fine American Federal Mahogany Card Table, Philadelphia, circa 1790-1815

About the Item

The austerity of the turned leg and lack of unnecessary embellishment is most effective in this fine card table. Showcasing vibrant flamed mahogany veneers along the aprons, the form is quite complex with the concave-convex serpentine of the ovolu structure. The conforming top is crafted of solid single planks of high polish red mahogany with crisply carved reeding of the solid along the outer edges, these lifting over original hinges to rest on a pair of outward gating legs. The legs are immediately recognizable as being of Philadelphia, as this was a common pattern for the region and rarely practiced elsewhere: the capital of five turned rings over a hollow with swollen reeding along the length of the leg over a bulb and long tapered foot all being very distinctive. Over each leg is a fine shield form inlay with matched crotch-mahogany surrounded by more austere mahogany grains. The apron is crafted of four layers of pine "laminated" blocking behind the mahogany veneers. The top is affixed with a series of screws set in wells along the edge and two pine fore-aft stretchers dovetail the front edge of the apron to the back edge. The pine inner rear rail is dovetailed to the apron and affixed to the outer rear rail with a series of original iron nails; the outer rear rail is oak with a three-over-two knuckle hinge, the fly-rail tenoned into the fly-leg. The legs terminate in a turned ball with a thin incised line around the equator over a tapering barrel and graduated ball toes. For any serious collector of period American furnishings, this is a simply gorgeous card table that has such movement throughout it's refined architecture. The deep and well developed patina throughout all surfaces is most attractive. Barquist, p. 214-15, f. 111; a card table from Philadelphia of the same date with very similar form, though less robust with a double-elliptic top instead of the ovolu ends of the present example. Measurements: 29 5/8” H x 36” W x 18” D. Condition report: Beautiful and old refinish with fine patina, light surface scratches and wear; some discolorations to opened top including a circular scar, some scuffing where gate legs rub. Entirely original with untouched structure; a few screws in hinges replaced. Additional images available upon request.
