About the Item
19th Century Portuguese Empire Center Table in Myrtlewood with Mem-Martins Marble Top
Origin: Portugal, circa 1820–1840
Materials: Myrtlewood (Murta), gilt bronze (ormolu), Mem-Martins marble
Dimensions: Height approx. 75 cm (29.5 in); Diameter approx. 90 cm (35.4 in)
Description
A rare and distinguished Portuguese Empire-style center table from the early 19th century, showcasing refined proportions and opulent decorative detailing. This exceptional piece is crafted in richly figured myrtlewood (murta), a prized native species known for its tight grain and warm, reddish tones.
The circular top is made from elegant Mem-Martins marble, a Portuguese stone characterized by its deep black coloration with soft, natural veining. The polished marble creates a dramatic contrast against the warm timber base, elevating the table’s visual impact.
The apron features fine gilt bronze appliqués with classical scrollwork, florals, and anthemion motifs, echoing the Neoclassical ideals embraced during the Empire period. A turned and paneled baluster-form pedestal supports the top, tapering into a quadripod base. Each foot is scrolled and richly adorned with additional ormolu mounts and rosette details, all retaining their original gilding and patina.
This table exemplifies the Portuguese interpretation of the Empire aesthetic, blending French-inspired grandeur with local materials and craftsmanship. Ideal as a central piece in refined interiors or period collections.
Condition
Very good antique condition. The marble top is intact, with no significant chips or cracks. The wood retains a deep patina and the gilt bronze mounts show only minimal wear consistent with age. Structurally stable and ready for placement.
Provenance and Context
This piece reflects the influence of Napoleonic design on Portuguese decorative arts in the early 19th century, incorporating locally sourced marble and fine native hardwoods. Tables of this quality and originality are rare on the international market, especially with their original Mem-Martins marble tops intact.
