About the Item

A masterwork of 19th-century Burmese craftsmanship, this intricately hand-carved table features an octagonal top supported by three dragons entwined around a central serpent column. The surface is richly ornamented with openwork floral and foliate designs, executed in deep relief with extraordinary precision. Each dragon is rendered with a sense of motion and vitality, its scales and curling tail meticulously detailed. The top’s pierced carving reveals a balance between strength and delicacy, hallmarks of the region’s finest woodwork. Drawing on Southeast Asian mythological symbolism, the dragons represent guardianship and power, while the coiled serpent—or naga—is associated with protection and renewal. Together they create a commanding sculptural form that blends artistic imagination with spiritual meaning. The deep, lustrous patina enhances the dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the carvings, giving the table both presence and warmth. In nice antique condition consistent with age and use, the table shows some minor losses to the carved details (pictured) that do not detract from its overall beauty or integrity. The structure is sound and stable, with a magnificent surface aged to perfection. A true statement piece, this table stands as a remarkable example of Burmese artistry and 19th-century exotic design. 29h x 26w x 26d
