Antique Johnson Handley Johnson European Carved Walnut & Satinwood Octagon Table

About the Item

An impressive Octagonal center or side table by Johnson Hadley Johnson, circa 1930s. Made from walnut with a matchbook veneered satinwood top. Drawing insipration from French and Italian Baroque styling. Features a scalloped carved and foliate swag apron over robust carved and turned legs with fluting and acanthus leaf accents over bun feet. Each leg is connected by a central stretcher with beautfully turned trophy shaped finial. Marked along the base with brass tag, #2744. Johnson Furniture was founded in 1908 by three brothers (Carl, Hjalmar, and Axel) who emigrated from Sweden in 1887. Specializing in period revivals from the styles of Sheraton, Hepplewhite, Empire, Colonial and other European designs. Carl had received a medal for his cabinetmaking skills from the King of Sweden before moving stateside. He worked closely with their in house designer Tom Handley to create these beautiful masterpieces. Tom's designs featured intricate marquetry and elaborate carvings, like the one offered above. He became an officer of the company in 1922, holding this position until his death in 1926. At this point their label changed to Jonhson Handley Johnson paying homage to him.     A beautiful mahogany File or Rent table by Kittinger. This table is part of the Thomas Jefferson collection that was authorized by the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation. It is a reproduction of the original table which was used by Thomas Jefferson and is located in the Monticello Library today. It has an octagonal top with hand-turned/hand-carved fluted pedestal baseending in a hoof foot. The four dovetailed drawers and four hinged door compartments have inlaid boxwood alphabetical lettering. The top swivels 360 degrees. Originally Purchased from William W. Sauer Associates Ltd. Virginia Beach, VA in 1997. "Monticello," Italian for "Little Mountain," is an enduring tribute to the genius and versatility of Thomas Jefferson, who personally designed and supervised erection of the splendid mansion. He resided in it for many years of his long life, his spirit lives on in its architectural perfection and the ingenious devices with which he equipped it, and he is buried nearby.
