About the Item

BIEDERMEIER CIRCULAR BIRCHWOOD AND PARCEL-EBONIZED CENTER TABLE Northern Europe circa 1830 Item # 306DPQ14A This Biedermeier period center table features a very sleek and rather whimsical design, the simple circular top set with twelve rays of veneers bookmatched to create a circle in the center of the table. The skirt is infinitely scalloped with ebonized acorn finials hanging from the height of each wave. The powerful center support features triple-reeded columns wrapped in ebonized rings that are gathered to raise the entire table, this over a curvy four-footed base with scrolling toes. The underside of the table showcases a very neat and tidy construction with a single fore-aft brace that runs from one side of the table to the other, set into grooves in the skirt on either side with screws. The brace is affixed to the column with a heavy forged iron bracket that runs through the brace, through the column to the underside of the base. Some illegible notations are scrolled in graphite on the top of the brace along with the date of 1922. A simply brilliant table in its simplicity, superb timbers and exquisite craftsmanship. Measurements: 29 5/8" H x 46" W Condition Report: Refinished in the 20th century; as the current surface is at least half of a century old, it has some light wear, scuffs, minor chips and light scratches as expected - no major blemishes, just a good historical surface overall; old repairs to some of the scallops and applied moldings around the skirting; very sturdy, strong and ready to place.
