Biedermeier tilt-top table
About the Item
This table is an exceptional example of a particularly opulent variant of the otherwise
restrained Biedermeier style. The round table-top is veneered with radially arranged segments
of flame mahogany, with flamboyant natural patters. The segments are separated by narrow
strips of rosewood veneer. Along the table-top edge runs a complex marquetry decorative
composition combining mahogany and rosewood in the form of vibrant foliage arabesques. The
table features a single central square support and a triangular base with three low bun feet.
Some elements of the base are in black lacquered wood. The table originates from the private
collection of an old Dubrovnik family and, during the 1950s, was included in the exhibition of then
newly established Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade, Serbia, as documented in the museum
records.
