By Gustave Herter
Located in Swedesboro, NJ
Large American Renaissance Revival Center Table Attributed to Gustave Herter – Exquisite 19th-Century Craftsmanship This extraordinary Renaissance Revival center table attributed to Gustave Herter exemplifies the grandeur and sophistication of mid-19th-century American design. Crafted in rich walnut with inlaid marquetry detailing, the table features a white marble top encircled by a finely cast gilt-bronze frieze of classical anthemion motifs. Below, a sculptural apron is adorned with alternating gilt accents and carved scrolls, supported by three architecturally fluted legs embellished with neoclassical motifs and crossed ribbon inlays. The base converges into a central urn pedestal atop a tripod stretcher terminating in massive paw feet, symbolizing strength and majesty. This table embodies Herter’s signature blend of German precision and American opulence, combining classical European influences with bold decorative innovation. About Gustave Herter (1830–1898): Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Gustave Herter immigrated to New York in the 1840s, where he became one of America’s foremost cabinetmakers. He later partnered with his brother in the famed firm Herter Brothers, whose clients included Vanderbilt, Astor, and Ulysses S. Grant. Their work defined Gilded Age interiors through extraordinary craftsmanship, elaborate carving, and luxurious materials.
