Charles X Style Center Table, 19th Century French
About the Item
This unique Charles X style center table showcases masterful marquetry work typical of the period. The tabletop features a central medallion in foliate and shell-like motifs and is surrounded by floral patterns that radiate outwards. Around the perimeter of the top there is a band of continuous scrolling patterns featuring classical figural depictions. The apron features delicate inlaid scrollwork and framed rosettes and hides four drawers. While inlay and marquetry work are typical of the style, the intricacy of the marquetry on this piece stands out among Charles X style furniture. Highly decorative carved and scrolling legs connect via a central stretcher featuring inlay in a similar floral motif. Brass clawed feet offer a subtle regal power to this piece which is a striking contrast between delicate inlay work and robust woodwork.
