Early 19th Century French Guéridon Centre Table

About the Item

An Extremely Good Quality Early 19th Century, French Empire Period, Mahogany Guéridon Centre Table, Having Original Dish Moulded Circular Marble Top, Over Elegant Comcave Triangulated Support With Elegant Scrolling Decoration To Original Carved Paw Feet And Original Recessed Castors. Guéridon is the French term for a wide ranging of size of circular tables, which we would generally regard in England as occasional tables, lamp tables, wine tables, or for the larger variations centre tables, or hall tables. They were always designed to stand in the centre of a room and far more often than not boasted marble tops for both decorative and practical reasons as they were very often originally purposed to hold lamps, sculptures, candelbras, or elaborate clocks. This table is better quality than many that you will find and a very practical, useful size. Constructed from high quality mahogany veneers, which have been expertly laid to create the fabulous decorative flame effect up each side of the triangulated base it also boasts a good quality marble top and exceptionally well carved feet with intricate detailing which was possibly originally gilded. Overall the condition of this table is very good indeed, with just a few old very small veneer repairs around the extreme edges which have now blended in with the original surface. It is structurally very sound indeed without any wobble to speak of on the top, which is a common complaint for many of these tables and it also stands on its original feet of course. The marble itself is generally in excellent condition without very many chips, scuffs and scratches at all, although it should be noted that there is one very old repair to the marble on the rim at the edge. It would appear that at some point in its history a piece around 6in by 2in has been broken off and then reapplied. Forunately the original piece was retained and has been expertly reinstated meaning that the repair does not distract from the item in the slightest. In fact if anything its good to see that it has had some use through its life and is all a part of its history. As with all items which we offer for sale this lovely table has been inspected at our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure that it is ready for immediate placement within the home following purchase. All things considered this is a great example of its type and would look fabulous in the hallway of many homes. There are of course a wide variety of other spaces which it could be utilised in due to its versatility and attractive proportions. Circa 1820. Height 29.5in. Width 38.5in. Depth 38.5in. • Rosewood 19th Century Writing Table

An exceptional quality mid-19th century, William IV Period, rosewood writing table having blind tooled leather inset to crossbanded top, over two drawers with original turned wooden knobs opposed by two false drawers, to extremely elegant shallow frieze, raised on reverse tapered, faceted, end supports with elegant carved scrolling feet and original recessed brass castors. Dating to the William IV period, which of course has a most distinctive style of its own sitting, despite not lasting very long between the late regency and victorian periods of english furniture making, this writing table has a lot of stand out features. Firstly it is a great size. A little bigger than many, indeed big enough to use as a day to day desk for working at, whilst not being overpoweringly large like many earlier georgian writing tables which one may find. It is also of exceptional quality. Clearly constructed in a top workshop it is constructed using high end, decorative rosewood veneers on the outside and a lot of mahogany as secondary timbers on the inside which is a great sign of quality. The entire table oozes class and sophistication in fact from top to bottom. The original turned wooden knobs are a nice feature, as is the high support...
