About the Item

An exceptional and important circa 1825, English regency, George IV period, parcel-gilt rosewood center table by the legendary firm Gillows of Lancaster, the large circular tilting top with exquisite bookmatched veneers and gilt 'gadroon' carved top edge surmounting hexagonal tapering column support with further gilt gadroon carved collar moldings upon concave triform platform base with gilt bead-carved top edge and dramatic gilt acanthus and scroll-carved feet on concealed casters. Stamped "Gillows · Lancaster" atop column block, this one of the finest tables of its kind and a rare marked example. This is the second table of nearly identical design A C R O T E R I O N has had the pleasure of offering in over twelve years and the only one marked. Gillows of Lancaster is one of the most celebrated and valued of English furniture makers. Established by Robert Gillow in 1730, Gillows furniture is highly sought after and commands a premium for its calibre of construction and design being a preferred supplier of furnishings to the British aristocracy throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. An exceptional circa 1820 English regency period rectangular-form writing or occasional table attributed to Gillows having brass bound cusped-corner top with ebony line inlay and satinwood feather-banding surrounding center field of bookmatched amboyna, the double elliptical high arched stretchers joining gilt-brass-mounted end supports having turned calamander spindles and braces issuing turned finials between ebony downswept legs ending in acanthus-leaf-cast brass casters. Several 'spindle end' writing tables were featured in the 'Gillows Estimate Sketch Book' of 1818, and a table of similar end supports stamped GILLOWS LANCASTER is illustrated in Susan Stuart's 'Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840', Vol. I., Woodbridge: Antique Collectors’ Club, 2008. pl. 329, p. 301, stating "a table frame with spindle ends was supplied in the 1820s by Gillows of London to display marble brought back from the Grand Tour by the Tempests of Broughton Hall...
