About the Item

An impressive Biedermeier period book-matched walnut tilt-top table standing upon a pedestal base from Berlin, Germany c.1830. This exceptional table was originally used in a grand apartment in the centre of an array of seating furniture. Because the table was the centrepiece of the room it was necessarily finished on all sides so it would be equally striking viewed from any direction. When this table was created the emphasis was on showcasing the astonishing beauty of the burl walnut veneers used to sheathe the entire surface of the table. It was about this time that the use of gas lighting in public spaces began to be adopted in residential settings and the illumination provided by a blazing fire in a hearth and lit candles when darkness fell became brighter and more steady with the introduction of gas lighting fixtures. Please use the zoom feature offered on our website to see the extraordinary colour and pattern of the burl walnut timber used to crreate the dramatic impact of this table. The circular top features a symmetrical arrangement of wedge shaped segments of the burl walnut placed in careful balance across the entire top to create a continuous pattern. The pattern of the walnut continued to be placed carefully along the entire outer perimetre of the table top adge as well as the slightly recessed circular apron that provides structural support for the top. Please notice how the naturalvariation in the light and dark colouration of the grain naturally increases its pleasing visual impact anywhere the eye looks. The table top is fastened with the original tilt top mechanism that allows the top to be moved to a vertical postion when the table needed to be moved to accommodate a lartger amount of people in the living space. Interestingly the tilt top mechanism is made of two pieces of wood that move laterally to release and lock the top in position when it is use. The striking pattern of the top was even more potent when the table was moved off to the side as the grain pattern is even more visible. The pedestal base on this table is especially intriguing because of its unusual concave design. The pedestal has a tapered profile with the three wider sides each following a slope that dips inward in a concave manner. Please look at the mesmerizing pattern of the grain across the surfaces and how the panels are matched to continue a seamless sense of movement. The three rounded feet that support the pedestal consist of a single sinuous line that reaches from the floor all the way up the pedestal to the underside of the table top. All of the flat planes of these sections are also sheathed in spectacular walnut that not only frames the concave areas but also emphasizes the sweep of the legs and feet. The lustrous quality of the patina has a beautifully polished appearance that reflects any light available in the space and brings the elaboarate beauty of the grain into high relief. As the table possesses a srtong architectural profile it is superb when used as a centre table in a hallway, living room or library but it is equally as effective when surrounded by chairs for a marvelous dining table in a cozy room. The magnificence of the workmanship in this table is as appealing today in the twenty first century as when the table was first created.
