Killarney furniture is prized by collectors. It has its own distinctive and generally recognized style, often inlaid with scenes from local beauty spots and buildings like Muckross Abbey, Glena Cottage, Muckross House and Ross Castle. This large Killarney Arbutus and yew wood marquetry centre table, the top is circular with a scalloped edge and has an inlaid centre piece of three large ferns surrounded by a wide border of inlaid ferns and bunches of berries, and a further outer border with sprigs of shamrock. It sits on an octagonal shaped pedestal profusely inlaid with harps, shamrocks and ferns sitting on a circular base with three splayed scrolled feet. The scalloped top is 145cm across. This piece was originally from Muckross House, Ireland. A truly magnificent example of early 19th century Irish craftsmanship. Though not a native Irish species, Arbutus wood grows abundantly in and around Killarney. It is typical used in Killarney furniture. It is light in color and closely grained, and yellows with age leaving a wonderful patina, as can be seen in this mid-19th century piece. The tradition of Killarney furniture began with small items like card cases, snuff boxes and chess boards as souvenirs aimed at the burgeoning 19th century tourist trade (which Thomas Cook was instrumental in) This led in turn to the production of much larger and ambitious pieces like tables, cabinets, bureaux and davenports. This marquetry table, inlaid with Arbutus and other local Killarney woods, would be a joy to own! Muckross House was built for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife, the water-colorist Mary Balfour Herbert. This was actually the fourth house that successive generations of the Herbert family had occupied at Muckross over a period of almost two hundred years. William Burn, the well-known Scottish architect, was responsible for its design. Building commenced in 1839 and was completed in 1843. During the 1850s, the Herbert's undertook extensive garden work in preparation for Queen Victoria's visit in 1861. Later, the Bourn Vincent family continued this gardening tradition. They purchased the estate from Lord and Lady Ardilaun early in the 20th century. This Victorian mansion stands close to the shores of Muckross lake, famed worldwide for its splendour and beauty.
