A Most Fabulous Antique English Burr Walnut Shaped Tilt-Top Loo or Centre Table
About the Item
Of all of the Antique English burr walnut Loo, Centre or Breakfast Table we have ever sold, this may be the finest, most exquisite one ever found on a UK buying trip. The top is magnificently shaped with an extraordinary belt or rope-carved edge (hand carved in bas relief, not applied!) The top is exquisitely quartered and veneered in highly figured burr walnut and the surface is in superb condition. The base appears to be made from hand carved, solid mahogany and exhibits superb "lion's head" masks, "C" scrolls and a variety of carved motifs that have never before been seen on a base. The top also retains its tilt-top mechanism and can stand up to provide economy of space when necessary, There is a slight oval "depression" where the quarters meet in the center of the top and is only mentioned for accuracy. It appears completely original and superbly beautiful. (The base is darker as one would expect since the top is exposed to the normal patination attained over 150 years and acts like an "umbrella" over the base which retains its darker superb colour. ) These tables were made popular by Queen Victoria's love of card games, in particular the game of lanterloo, hence the recognized name for these tables. They also make exquisite centre tables for a foyer or perfect as a small dining or breakfast table. In fabulous, age-appropriate condition. The table has a 27" kneehole clearance for comfort of anyone at any height.
