About the Item

A rare coffee table from Florence Knoll’s “Parallel Bar” series, designed in 1954 for Knoll International. This piece embodies the refined architectural sensibility that defined Knoll’s postwar modernism — furniture conceived not as decoration but as part of the architectural space itself. Crafted with a polished chrome tubular frame and a rosewood-veneered top, it reveals the disciplined geometry and material integrity characteristic of Florence Knoll’s vision. The warmth of the rosewood contrasts beautifully with the precision of the chrome, achieving a timeless equilibrium between structure and comfort. Originally introduced as part of the “Parallel Bar” collection — which included sofas, benches, and occasional tables — this coffee table represents one of the least-documented configurations of the series, seldom appearing on the market today. Produced under Florence Knoll’s direction at Knoll International in the mid-1950s, it reflects her pursuit of proportion, order, and integration between architecture and furniture. The present example has been carefully restored while retaining its authenticity: the chrome base was re-polished to its original brilliance, and the rosewood top was delicately sanded and treated with natural oil to enhance its texture and depth. Manufacturer markings remain beneath the top, confirming its period origin. Tables from the Parallel Bar series are exceptionally scarce, particularly in rosewood. Most surviving examples belong to private collections or institutional archives. This piece offers a rare opportunity to acquire a documented work by Florence Knoll — a figure whose disciplined approach and architectural clarity continue to define the language of American modern design.
