About the Item
Monumental, intricate, timeless; all words that aptly describe this phenomenal example of American craftsmanship. This table came to us while sourcing something entirely different: an early, monumental 96” oval Saarinen pedestal dining table. Perhaps it was the stark contrast between the two, one adorned with elaborate hand-carvings, the other distilled to the purest expression of form, that drew us to them both. Saarinen’s masterful simplicity only amplified the timeless beauty of this walnut table, each connected by their shared provenance, as both were used in a bank setting.
Of the four locks on this partners table’s drawers, one is stamped simply with “Boston.” This subtle but telling detail offers a clue to the table’s likely history and original use. The presence of drawers on both sides suggests it was made as a partners table, likely for two officers or clerks working across from one another, possibly within a trust department. Crafted entirely from solid walnut in the American Renaissance Revival style, it radiates a sense of grandeur and stability, qualities that aligned with the architectural and symbolic messaging common in late 19th to early 20th-century banking institutions.
Cascading scrolls, volutes, guilloche bands, and a faintly Gothic undercurrent define the deeply carved details, executed with remarkable precision and artistry. While the original maker is unknown, the level of craftsmanship suggests a custom commission, likely a one-of-a-kind piece, expressly made for a Boston-area financial institution.
This table’s commanding presence feels utterly relevant today. We envision it as a grand foyer table, topped with an equally impressive floral arrangement or curated books; as a kitchen island in an imaginative and layered interior; or returned to its original purpose as an inspired desk. However it’s used, it will remain a visual delight in a well-appointed, eclectic home.
