17th. C. Spanish Colonial Coffee Table

About the Item

A rare and evocative 17th century Spanish walnut table, richly patinated and deeply expressive, now adapted for use as a coffee table. This remarkable piece exemplifies early Iberian vernacular craftsmanship with its bold, hand-carved geometric motifs and robust joinery. The front apron is detailed with three carved panels featuring radial starburst and rosette designs, framed by chip-carved borders—a hallmark of rural Spanish woodworking. The central panel retains its original hand-wrought iron escutcheon and keyhole, while the thick, single-plank top showcases centuries of use with beautiful wear, old tool marks, and a naturally aged surface. The joinery is consistent with 17th century construction, including large, hand-cut dovetails and pegged mortise-and-tenon joints. The table is supported by squared rear legs and boldly turned front bun feet, offering an honest and authentic asymmetry that speaks to its utilitarian origins. The underside reveals old repairs and added structural bracing, consistent with its age and continued use over time.
