About the Item

Designed in 1983 by Giotto Stoppino and Lodovico Acerbis, the Menhir collection is inspired by the stone monoliths of the British Isles and France, which are the archetype of the column. This research gave rise to the design of a base consisting of a steel column and marble drums with different finishes and shapes placed on top of each other. The current version maintains the drums’ shape but has more contemporary finishes, with matt marble and new lacquered tops in colours that recall the gritty imagination of the late 60s and evoke the company’s heritage. Base units and tops System of low tables and consolles feature versatility, combination of various shapes, sizes and materials. The base unit is made of epoxy powder coated steel in black matt finish, available in the following heights: 36.2 - 42.5 - 48.8 for tables and 80.2 for consoles. The tops in the Ø 80, 100, 120 cm size and 180x40 consolles are made of medium density wood fibre, 20 mm thick, worked on the edge. The tops are available in glossy lacquered finishes in burgundy, pink, dark green, mustard yellow, brick red, clay, white and black or in the special inlaid and brushed open grain veneer, in black ash and dark stained walnut. The drums have five different sizes and weights and ring the column, giving the table the necessary weight to guarantee stability and create supporting structures with a differentiated design. Monolithic elements are available in matt marble, in the Carrara Statuario white, Marquinia black, Levanto red and Alpi green finish, a chromatic variety that reveals a typically Italian tradition. Lodovico Acerbis was born in Albino, Bergamo in 1939 and graduated in Economics and Business in Milan. In 1963 he joined his father’s company with the aim of creating design furniture by applying the most advanced technologies and the best materials. Founded in 1870, as a carpentry workshop, the company under his direction reached industrial dimensions and established itself as a leading company in the sector. Lodovico Acerbis combined his work as an industrialist with that of a designer, producing some of the most significant creations of Italian production, often signed together with Giotto Stoppino, with whom he created a fervent creative partnership. Born in Vigevano in 1926, Giotto Stoppino studied Architecture at Milan and Venice. Since 1953 he has devoted himself almost entirely to architecture, founding together with Gregotti and Meneghetti one of the most culturally committed architects’ offices. Since 1968, with his own independent studio, he has dedicated himself to design. He was president of ADI for the three-year period 1982-1985 and president of the Compasso d’Oro award in 1984. His works are in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, in the Museum für angewandte Kunst in Munich, in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the City-Hall in Shanghai. Acerbis Large Moodboard Coffee Table in White Marble & Dark Stained Walnut Top
By Massimo Mariani, Acerbis
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A system of small tables with a top made by freely combining different contrasting materials: wood, marble, shiny metals, giving life to a mosaic of materials differing by type, color nuances, texture and thickness. Rectangular or square, the tables can also be freely combined with each other to form large coffee tables with an ever-changing material and graphic effect. A polished metal tray, the thickness of which is designed to match perfectly with the different thicknesses of the table tops, can be added as a valet or utility tray. Dark matte grey painted support structure and feet. Table shipped disassembled. Finishes: - Wood tops, thickness 30 mm, Swamp Oak or Swamp Ash - Marble tops, thickness 15 mm, white arabesque or grey graphite, matte finish - Tray, thickness 15 mm, in polished steel or brass (*) Swamp oak and Swamp ash Special veneer identified as a ''fossil'' since obtained from trunks found below ground, where they have been preserved under layers of clay for hundreds of years. The anaerobic environment inhibited the growth of microorganisms preventing the inexorable process of slow decay. On the contrary, over time the internal elements are transformed and others have been added: the mineral salts are combined with those present in the wood matrix, slowly transforming the organic state. This long natural process, which cannot be replicated, gives the wood a unique, precious appearance, with surprising colors and textures. The aging of the wood can also cause the formation of cracks and splits which are puttied and repaired but not eliminated during processing, because they are the signs of time that provide evidence of the great age and uniqueess of the material. Born in Florence, Massimo Mariani lives and works in London. He studied architecture with Giancarlo De Carlo at the University of Genoa. After graduation he joined Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Genoa and later Herman Hertzberger...
