This elegantly simple table showcases the superb work accomplished by 18th century cabinet makers in France with their understanding of line and profile. The rich warmth of the cherry timber used in this table has mellowed over time while the waxed patina enhances its delightful glowing surface. The top of the table has been made of a series of timber planks fitted together before the edges were shaped on all four sides to form a graceful series of curves. The entire edge has a moulded profile used to capture and reflect light, originally fire and candlelight in the 18th and 19th centuries, but now the glow of electric light. The apron of the table contains a single drawer in the front that is raised against the apron. The drawer also features a moulded edge and is opened by pulling on the iron handle. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of this table is the way in which the four legs are joined to the apron. The manner in which the cabinet maker used a single continuously carved line to disguise the join between the sweep of the cabriole leg and the shape of the apron is enchanting. The only straight lines on this table appear on the rectangular drawer all else is a marvellous combination of visually delightful curves. Because this table was created to serve as a centre table it has been completed on all four sides with the same attention to detail and appearance.
