About the Item

This exquisite Antique French figural rectangular form gilt bronze coffee table is designed in the Louis XVI style. This unusual table features a thick rectangular marble top in deep purple with white and gray veining, supported by a finely cast figural gilt bronze base. Each corner of the table is surmounted by a bust of a classical female figure, cast in full relief and integrated into the leg structure, a characteristic element of neoclassical design popular during the Louis XVI period. The apron is ornamented with a continuous beaded border and laurel banding, typical of decorative schemes seen in late 18th-century French furniture. The structure comprises four tapering square-section legs, each anchored with rosettes at the feet and adorned with vertical foliate casting on the outer faces. The legs are joined by X-shaped stretchers intersected by a circular platform at the center, edged with an openwork gallery. The overall form is symmetrical and low, with the marble top supported flush on the bronze frame. The corners of the marble are rounded and molded, aligning precisely with the bronze busts beneath them. The gilt bronze elements are finely chased and retain a consistent matte gold finish. The neoclassical motifs, including laurel leaves, rosettes, and classical female herm figures, align with the decorative vocabulary found in Parisian bronziers’ work during the late 1800s, especially those producing furniture mounts in the manner of Adam Weisweiler and François Rémond. The richly colored marble top is likely sourced from French or Italian quarries, contributing both visual weight and contrasting texture to the composition.
