Antique Italian scagliola with designs, tabletop, table. 19thC

About the Item

Antique Italian scagliola top with decoration depicting work tools (perhaps a sculptor's tools?) on a black background. In the center is a reproduction of a drawing/drawing of a vase. 19th century era. Dimensions: 121 cm (length); 61 (width); 3.5 (height). Notes Scagliola was produced by mixing a particular chalk (made from pulverized selenite) with binders and dyes; it was then spread, according to the design, on a wet chalk base; once hardened it was polished so that it took on an appearance as similar as possible to marble. This is precisely the reason for the birth of scagliola: the imitation, with poor materials, of artifacts and works in marble and semi-precious stones, which were difficult to create, difficult to obtain, and expensive for many patrons. The earliest traces of scagliola date back to 1582 with Blasius Pfeiffer (Munich), founder of a family of scagliola makers. Since then this technique has spread throughout Italy, imported by Carpi resident Guido Fassi (1584-1649) around the second decade of the seventeenth century, first to Carpi (Modena), the Intelvi Valley, then Florence, Rome, Naples, and later to other European countries such as England.
