This jewel of a coffee table, crafted in brass by Armand Jonckers, embodies the fusion of art and functionality. What immediately stands out are the fluid forms interlocking with one another. Two powerful volumes subtly engage in dialogue, while the surface’s level differences create a dynamic composition and an almost landscape-like appearance. Its solidity contrasts with the refinement of its finish. The surface is richly engraved with fine patterns reminiscent of feathers or flowing currents. These textures, masterfully applied, reveal Jonckers’ artisanal expertise. More than furniture, this work is an artistic statement from the 1970s, where art, nature, and craftsmanship converge. An icon of Belgian design history with timeless presence.
Sculptor, engraver, antiquarian, mineralogist, decorator - Armand Jonckers (1939) is a creative multi-talent. Jonckers graduated at Fine Arts in Lausanne in 1957 and opened his own workshop shortly afterwards. Upon graduating, he embarked on a number of creative endeavours: dealing in antiques, studying mineralogy, collecting gems and decorating residences and boutiques, including the clothing shop Lollipop, two Saudi Arabian palaces and the club Le Fashion, a favourite of the Paris elite. From here, he began designing furniture, much of which reused vintage objects and materials. Jonckers evidences a style that some have referred to as baroque with a touch of humor. Although his sought-after works include the monumental tables and coffee tables in the hotel salons, he has never had a formal gallery show.
