Art Deco French Square Tea/Coffee Table

About the Item

We kindly invite you to read the entire description, as it provides detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our items. This elegant and refined French Art Deco square table is crafted from walnut burl. The entire structure is made of solid walnut, beautifully adorned with a decorative veneer of precious walnut burl. The square tabletop is supported by four sturdy legs with a distinctive rectangular cross-section. A second lower shelf is positioned just beneath the main surface, creating an open space between the two levels. This design not only enhances the table’s stability but also contributes to its harmonious and well-balanced aesthetic, making it both unique and functional. The artisans aimed to create a compact yet sophisticated piece with clean, decisive lines. The result is a timelessly elegant table, whose design balances austerity and precision with refined simplicity, giving it a dynamic and distinguished character. This table was handcrafted between 1930 and 1935 by a master artisan in a renowned woodworking atelier in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a French town in the Isère department, famously known as the "City of Furniture" due to its long-standing woodworking tradition. The artisans employed traditional techniques of sanding, varnishing, and polishing to enhance the natural depth, flame patterns, and grain of the walnut burl. These methods give the tabletop a stunning and captivating appearance. Walnut burl is sourced from the tree's root system and is distinguished by its intricate, twisted grain patterns, which give it remarkable hardness and density. Beyond its durability, it is highly prized for its aesthetic appeal—each piece is unique due to the naturally varying grain patterns, making it an exceptionally elegant and refined material. Walnut burl is particularly associated with luxury furniture design. Art Deco refers to a style and aesthetic movement that flourished in Europe and the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. The term "Déco" originates from the "Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes," held in Paris in 1925, which marked the beginning of this artistic phenomenon. Art Deco influenced decorative arts, visual arts, architecture, and fashion. It is characterized by clean, symmetrical forms, elegant proportions, bold geometric shapes, and a strong sense of sculptural refinement. The table has been meticulously restored by a skilled cabinetmaker in Florence, Italy, using time-honored woodworking techniques that are part of a rich artisanal heritage. Thanks to this expert restoration, the table is in excellent condition.
