Bauhaus Two-Tier Chromium & Cellulosed Table from Heal and Son, 1931

Two-tier rectangular table (22" high) with distinctive Bauhaus chromium plated steel tubular oval supports and black "cellulosed" wood top and deep red lower level shelf. Ambrose Heal of Heal & Son Ltd. (today known mainly as Heal's) was an innovative retailer of furniture and design and during the early 1930's was determined to import the new "international style" of the Bauhaus to UK homes. In 1931 he set about showcasing this modern tubular furniture through a series of exhibitions called "Modern Tendencies" - ref: Art Into Industry – The Bauhaus at Heal’s. See photo from 1931 showing a dining table sized version of the table presented here. Most likely the work of Heal & Son's in-house designer-makers Johnson, Greenwood and Shepherd. Chrome is in excellent condition and is original. Both the black and red wood tops have been re-lacquered.
