About the Item

This large and sturdy Indian daybed coffee table features large storage drawers with British-made Campaign handles. Daybeds like this were used by Indians who used them as temporary (during the day) napping areas with a thin pad or also at night. Personal effects including clothing books or valuables were placed in the drawers. The style of the daybed is very simple, probably influenced by Colonial Campaign furniture. The piece is entirely made from dense, insect-resistant teak wood and dates to the early 20th century. All wooden parts are original. The piece is monumental in scale -ideal for a great room, living room or even an outdoor loggia. Teak wood is very resistant to moisture, changing temperature and insects, which give teak furniture an almost unlimited lifespan. We did change out the Campaign handles, which were a hodgepodge of 4 different sizes for 6 handles! We can infer from this that the original handles had broken and been replaced ad-hoc. Though we normally prefer to keep pieces in their original state as much as possible, the appearance (and function) of the unmatched handles was undesirable. Since very high-quality modern solid brass handles matching the approximate original proportions are available on the market today, we decided to change them all.

Though we normally prefer to keep pieces in their original state. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. We refinished this piece to a black lacquer rubbed finish.
