About the Item

Jacques Duval-Brasseur attributed scorpion coffee table, France, 1970s. Patinated bronze with a round glass top. Good original condition. Jacques Duval-Brasseur Jacques Duval-Brasseurs preferred metal is brass, which he shaped, welded and polished to give his sculptures varied, different shapes for furniture. He has always been inspired by nature, such as woods, whole trees and plants, as well as animal beasts, such as scorpions, lizards or birds and gazelles. With the years of his work he also integrated shells and semi-precious stones into his bizarre furniture designs. In 1969 he exhibited 4 of his works at the Maison & Jardin Gallery with Jean Dive, which led to his big breakthrough. The then Shah of Persia and the actor David Niven bought the first of these works. With his unclassifiable works he became the darling of the jet set. Today we can see that decorators like to present his works again. Jacques Duval-Brasseur, born 1934 in Tours, became known as a designer and sculptor who was inspired entirely by nature. His designs seem to have a natural soul, all his pieces are either bizarre animal-butterflies or fantastic branches that have been shaped e.g. into a corner table. Or they look like beasts, combined with a bronze grasshopper that serves as a base for sculptural trays. Nature is infinitely valuable in his imaginative creations. He studied at the Cherbourg School of Fine Arts and in the early 1960s began to use materials bought from scrap metal dealers, creating his first abstract sculptures from body panels of old cars, or his first insects from the tanks of mopeds. Until his artistic breakthrough, he worked as a decorator and already designed his sculptures at that time. In the 1980s his works were marked by a revival of geometric design and his work gradually became more fashionable. For some it is on the verge of kitsch, but Duval-Brasseurs works are elegant and anything but boring. With his unclassifiable works he became the favourite of the jet set. While the Gulf War took away his last customers, rich emirs who loved large golden raptors, Duval-Brasseur finally left the art scene for many years
