Charcoal Blocks, Sculptural, Geometric, Shou Sugi Ban Coffee or Side Tables
About the Item
The Charcoal Blocks are a grouping of five upright and angled tables. Each of the individual pieces sits with a tilted stance and together they can be organized into a row, grouped loosely in a random arrangement or placed into some variation between the two. As the table is a composition of individual pieces the orientation and arrangements can change as desired and a piece can even be pulled away as a side table or stool. With end grain tops, the blackened and burnt finish deepens the natural characteristics in the grain, accentuating the rings, checks, and other textures from the beam’s history. These simple angles, geometric forms, and the dark tactile finish create a sculptural and modern statement in any interior.
Constructed from salvaged Douglas fir beams. These handmade pieces are twice burned, wire brushed, and finished with a matte oil based seal. All dimensions are approximate and each piece is unique.

Please scroll down to read IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT OUR STUMPS before purchase!
Originating in 18th century Japan, shou sugi ban is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil.
Why buy our stumps?
KILN DRIED
Our stumps all go through a drying process in our kiln, sometimes for up to a month. We are meticulous with bringing each and every log to a specific moisture level. This process helps with major cracking, long-term moisture issues, and bugs.
ECO FRIENDLY
In an effort to replenish the trees we use, we plant 50+ trees a year. In addition, we practice salvage logging. Where do we source these? Some of the trees fall naturally. Some have damage from severe wind, lightning, flood, disease, or other natural disturbance so they need to be cut and removed before they fall. Others are fresh cut because people want them off their land. Salvage logging may reduce erosion, reduce intensity of future wildfires, and slow buildup of pest insects.
FAMILY OWNED
These are made from our family to yours. Quality is of utmost importance, and we hand cut, de-bark, sand, and finish every piece with care.
COMMERCIAL GRADE
These stumps are meant to be loved and USED. Each is finished with a durable commercial-grade finish. This finish is tough enough for spills, kids, and holds up in hotel and hospitality settings.
