During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that harnessed warmth from the kitchen fire. Used while seated atop the kang, low tables and cabinets such as this provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games.
This lacquered kang chest from the early 20th century has a simple silhouette and just a touch of traditional embellishments. The cabinet's paneled front is decorated with a beaded trim and floral scrollwork, hand-carved in low relief and finished with traces of gilt pigment. Crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the low chest features two drawers and a larger, center compartment that opens with an antique key and has a fully removable door.
