About the Item
The glass top of the Chiral K531-40 coffee table rests on a sculptural solid-wood base which itself is an exercise in radial symmetry. The five walnut legs, each with a triangular cross section, lean into and past each other. They are separated from each other by maple wood spacers, and taper at their ends.

17" high
The 1/2" tempered glass top has a beveled edge and is secured to the base
The two-tone base is in walnut and maple

The Story Behind Chiral K531-40
There are so many types of bases for small round tables. One that has always interested me has three legs leaning together, "teepee" style. With this table, I'm exploring the geometry of tables with five legs. When five legs, each with a triangular cross section, are leaned together and join face-to-face, they have a certain tilt angle.
I used my high school geometry to develop a model for predicting the tilt angle for joining legs, depending on the number of legs and the angle at the apex where the legs come together. And that model makes all kinds of combinations possible. For the K 531 the tilt angle is 37 degrees from vertical.
Chiral (pronounced "Kiral") means that the mirror image is not identical to the original, and often is used when describing helixes, whether "right-handed" or "left-handed."
The challenge of the Chiral K531 was to find a way to assemble a skewed bundle of five legs. The solution was to add spacers between the legs - in the K531 these show up as maple cylinders between the walnut legs.
In the product name, "K" stands for coffee table, "5" for the number of legs, "3" for triangular cross section, "1" for the circular top, and "40" for the diameter of the top.

Jambosco is based in northern Indiana, a land abounding in corn fields and RV factories, where you might park your car next to an Amish buggy at the grocery store, or get invited to your neighbor's quinceanera party. The vibrancy of contrasting cultural ways pushes us to reconsider the well-trod paths of convention. Style-wise, the dominant influence for Jambosco is mid-century modernism. All pieces are American-made by craftsmen in northern Indiana. James Loewen is the founder of Jambosco. Born in the Congo and raised on several continents, he studied industrial design in Milan Italy, has designed furniture and other objects for many years, and now lives in Goshen Indiana.
