Coffee Table Circular in Tiger Eyes by Etienne Allemeersch

Belgian artist and designer Etienne Allemeersch used semi-precious stones and fossil inlays to craft exquisite furniture pieces, which are favorites among collectors and devotees of mid-century modern and Hollywood Regency styles. 

Born in Belgium in 1926, Allemeersch gained design experience while working in the workshop of Ado Chale, an artist and designer best known for his opulent mosaic inlays made from petrified wood, polished stone, metal and bone.

Chale’s influence is apparent in much of Allemeersch’s furniture, especially in his use of mosaic and resin. For instance, several of his coffee tables, side tables and end tables feature detailed inlays made from rare natural materials such as tiger-eye wood, marcasite and lapis lazuli. Allemeersch’s meticulous technique is also seen in his rectangular tessellated bone wall mirror, with circular inlays set in a black resin frame.

Allemeersch’s pieces peaked in popularity among interior designers and collectors by the 1970s but have made a major comeback as coveted collectibles in recent times.
