The Style and Legacy of Don Shoemaker
Don Shoemaker, an American-born designer who made Mexico his home, became one of the key figures in the Mexican Modernism movement. Known for his masterful woodworking and use of native Mexican materials, Shoemaker’s designs often reflect the artisanal traditions of the region while showcasing modern, organic forms. His use of richly grained woods like rosewood and walnut, coupled with natural materials such as cane and leather, created a distinct, luxurious aesthetic that blended the rustic warmth of Mexico with sleek modernist principles.
This coffee table, though created in the style of Shoemaker, encapsulates the spirit of his design ethos. The table’s blend of walnut and cane exudes a sense of casual sophistication, while the glass top adds a functional, contemporary touch.
Mexican Modernism: A Design Movement
Mexican Modernism, which flourished in the mid-20th century, represents a fusion of local craftsmanship with international modernist trends. Designers like Don Shoemaker embraced traditional Mexican techniques, often working with indigenous materials, but applied them to sleek, modern forms that resonated with the global design movement of the time. This movement sought to honor Mexico’s rich cultural heritage while propelling its aesthetic identity into the modern age.
Interior Design and Vibe
This walnut and cane coffee table brings warmth, texture, and a sense of history into any interior. Its organic materials and craftsmanship lend an artisanal, earthy vibe, ideal for creating a serene, inviting space. The table’s minimalist yet tactile design makes it a perfect fit for bohemian, mid-century modern, or rustic interiors. It can serve as a focal point in a living room, complementing other wood tones and natural elements, or be contrasted with more contemporary furnishings to create a rich, layered look.
Whether anchoring a seating area or adding a touch of organic elegance to a modern space, this coffee table offers a versatile and stylish addition to any home. Its combination of craftsmanship and understated elegance embodies the best of Mexican Modernism, making it both a conversation piece and a functional work of art.

Don Shoemaker Mid-Century Modern Coffee Table with Leather Top
By Don S. Shoemaker
Located in Mexico City, CDMX
We offer this fantastic coffee table made in pieces of solid cocobolo wood with leather top designed by Don Shoemaker for Señal S.A., circa 1960
About Don Shoemaker:
Coming from an affluent family, Don was originally from Nebraska. During the 1930s he studied at the fine Arts Institute of Chicago thinking to become a painter. Visiting Mexico for his honeymoon he fell in love with the country and he finally decided to move to Mexico in the late 1940s. He lived for a while and painted in San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato, but finally he settled down in a little uphill town called Santa María de Guido, overseeing the city of Morelia, in the state of Michoacan, Mexico.
Don began the manufacture of his furniture in tropical precious woods and other wood products. What started as a little factory in the late 1950s called SEÑAL, S.A., grew to the point where Don employed more than a hundred skilled craftsmen. Soon Shoemaker became an important milestone of the economic and cultural life of his adopted home. SEÑAL, S.A. brought great wealth and economical boost to the village and Don was well known for his good heart and charity projects.
Don S. Shoemaker delivered furniture pieces in to his showrooms in Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and large cities in Mexico. His designs were very much appreciated by wealthy Mexican families...
