The impressive furniture carved and fashioned from one significant tree root with an additional foot added, in an elliptical form with exposed smoothed top in multiple planes and naturalistic natural bark sides the top smoothly polished to expose a fine grained surface. History: It takes an expert's eye to recognize the beauty and potential of root and burl treasures that are found in the wild. Skilled artisans then transform these natural wonders into functional and unique works of art China’s root carving tradition dates far back to the Warring States period, over 2000 years ago. This desk or table called “Chaji” by Chinese can be associated as early as the late Ming Dynasty,17th century. By the 20th century, China’s entrepreneurial furniture makers began crafting more exotic tea and coffee tables and chairs from singular huge roots- some reaching ten feet in diameter. This superb example is among the best work of art to come out of a Fujian family workshop and the private collection of the president of the shop.. in many decades. It is carved from a huge, exotic golden camphor tree root and wood found on the border with Myanmar.
