- Condition:Repaired: Traces of fills to the gilding. Wear consistent with age and use. Very good antique condition. Fleabites and slight scratches to marble top. Minor rubs to base, resulting in light losses to gilding. Traces of restoration work to gilding, but there is still the presence of red bole, which is a desirable trait.

Topped by a beautiful striated Flandres Rouge marble, this giltwood console from circa 1860 was hand-carved with Louis XVI style motifs. The one inch thick red, pink, beige, brown, and gray marble has a chamfered edge. It has been carved with two rectangular protrusions that align with the fluted legs below.

Period French Louis XVI Giltwood Firescreen, circa 1780

This Louis XVI period giltwood firescreen is a rather unique find. Typically firescreens from this period (the late 1700’s) were produced with a tapestry or needlepoint body; this particular piece has a solid colored (gold) silk upholstery screen which meshes well with the giltwood frame. Firescreens were used during warmer months to cover the opening of the fireplace.
The detachable crest (which can be removed to replace or reupholster the screen) has bell shaped finials on the shoulders that are connected by a raised carving. This pair of brightly silvered bronze chenets are from France (circa 1900), in the style of Louis XVI, as noted by the presence of laurel leaf festoons and pots au feu finials. They were used in well-appointed homes, not only to decorate the front of the fireplace, but to prevent burning logs from rolling onto priceless rugs, should they break free of the fire. Often seen in natural wrought iron, or gilded in gold (in finer homes), it is unusual to see them in silvered bronze.
