Handcrafted Wood and Blue Mosaiced Plexiglass Coffee Table by Hillsideout

About the Item

The Big Mosaiced Coffee Table is part of the Mosaiced furniture collection. This collection finds inspiration in the water element. The piece’s name, “Blue Gold”, further emphasizes the importance of water, especially in locations with scarce water resources. The table incorporates the idea of the Indian stepwell reservoirs, known as “baoris”. These are famous for their architectural significance in particular in the Bundi District. Stepwells are examples of storage and irrigation tanks, wells or ponds, characterized by a set of steps. These structures were built more than 800 years ago and were first used as an art form by the Hindus. The bottom of the Big Coffee Table shows a reproduction of little stairs and colorful mosaics. This is a reference to antique floors covered by water because of the changing sea level during the centuries. The mosaics reflect onto the floor when the light above is turned on. One half of the tabletop is covered by a glass while the other part is not as it permits a different view and perception of the materials. The old table legs, made of nut wood coming from 1860, are immersed in transparent resin in order to strengthen the old wood. Resin in different heights also reiterates the idea of the changing water levels. The whole furniture piece is hand-made using several Italian woods: chestnut, nut, cherry and elm.

Sand Senses Cupboard in Wood by Hillsideout
By Hillsideout, Rossana Orlandi
Located in Milan, IT
The Sand Senses cupboard features materials made with sand and surface that stimulate senses when touched. Sand seems to have no limit. Burnt sand makes the Murano glass transparent. Concrete incorporates more than one type of sand - one comes from the river and the other one has been transformed through a chemical process. Wood is sandblasted and treated with oil-wax to obtain the smoothest surface possible. Geometric shapes can be found in the concrete legs, in the cupboard doors, as well as on the top enriched with openings in colored Murano glass. With its four colorful doors, two drawers and several shelves, this piece turns out to be a very aesthetically pleasing and practical cupboard; representing the perfect solution for both storing and showcase use...
