James DeWulf, Exo Radio, Concrete & Steel Low Table, United States, 2021

About the Item

Los Angeles-based artist James De Wulf, has been widely recognized for his original and innovative work with concrete design. Known for his commitment to pushing the limits of his art both functionally and aesthetically, James fuses concrete technology with modern and natural concrete forms and other materials including bronze, brass, steel, stainless steel, and iron. An early career in investment banking was followed by years working as a real estate developer in Atlanta, GA. Upon visiting a concrete shop for a new development project, James became fascinated by concrete as a material source. Profoundly moved by its transformation from liquid to stone, his passion for handmade design began. In 2004, James relocated to Los Angeles to explore this new medium of artistry, with an initial focus on concrete countertop installations. His craft and attention to detail soon caught the eyes of an elevated clientele of designers, who began commissioning work on a project basis. Over the next decade heestablished De Wulf Concrete, a boutique design firm servicing architects, interior decorators, commercial retail outlets, and residential clients. In 2014, James moved to Berlin to further develop business within Europe and Asia, followed by time in Copenhagen, Malmö, and Koh Samui. Now back in LA, James De Wulf’s cutting edge designs have evolved into a full scale product line of indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, sinks, countertops, and even gaming and ping-pong tables.

Concrete and Steel Low Table No.9, usa
By Stefan Rurak
Located in New York, NY
The table tops of Rurak’s Action Series Low Tables feature his unique plates of individually hand-patinated steel. The smooth surface of the steel is populated with splashes and stains, finished with oil and buffed wax and then gilded along the edges in 24kt gold. The drum shaped base of the table is an assemblage of concrete, sand, rocks, pigment and paint applied with an expressionist rigor. Gold inlaid etchings are added impulsively, completing the work. Todd Merrill Studio began representing Brooklyn based artist Stefan Rurak in 2019. Rurak’s furniture defies conventional boundaries – merging fine art aesthetics, modern conceptual design, and traditional, hand-made craftsmanship techniques. His evocative, one-of-a-kind works are the type of collectible pieces built to span generations. Working with a variety of materials – wood, cast concrete, and steel – Rurak draws no distinction between art and design – the utilitarian becoming a canvas for his aesthetic endeavor. Each piece conveys movement, action, and intuition, providing a stark counterpoint to the meticulous construction and composition of the functional skeleton underneath. Throughout each piece is evidence of the artist at work. A cast concrete drawer face or a cabinet’s steel...
