Jean de Lespinasse (1896-1979), unique duo of coffee tables, France 1950

About the Item

Unique pair of coffee tables by Jean de Lespinasse, France 1950. This duo of tables comes in two versions. The larger one features a fresco in shades of blue, the second in a dominant yellow. Both are framed with olive tiles, resting on folded and black lacquered metal legs. The blue model is: 81.5/51/31.5 ccm The yellow model is: 71/51/37 cm They are signed "JDL" (see photos). Biography: A member of the Resistance on the Côte d'Azur during the Second World War, Jean de Lespinasse set up a local craft business after the war, then he created SOCFRA with his wife, which would produce ceramics from the end of the 1940s. Their path would then cross that of Roger Capron and his wife Jacotte, the Madoura workshops, Robert Picault and Georges Tardieu. The ceramic workshop is located in the Cimiez district of Nice. The pieces generally bear the acronym "JdL" on the bottom. The pieces signed by the Jean de Lespinasse workshop are generally large, nervous and very structured. We note above all a great work in the enamel, between the mats and the brilliants, which demonstrates a great mastery of the art of ceramics. The activity of the workshop ceased at the beginning of the 1980s, after the death of the founder.
