Large Roberto Monsani low coffee table for Acerbis Italia 70's
About the Item
Large solotto or coffe table designed by Roberto Monsani for the very famous Italian company Acerbis in the 1970s.
Made of laminated wood with polished steel coating and thick plexiglass base. Thanks to the Plexiglas, it looks like the steel top is suspended in the air. It looks even better in presence than in photos.
Roberto Monsani, a Florentine, architect of famous Tuscan villas, and a designer active in the fields of furniture and store fittings, passed away on March 11, 2024
Founder of the 3BM studio together with Luigi and Giancarlo Bicocchi and with Lisindo Baldassini, he designed from 1963 some famous villas in Roccamare (Castiglione della Pescaia, Grosseto) of which he contributed substantially to define the residential structure.
Among his completed projects are Villa Bertini, Villa Verusio, Villa Fraschetti, Villa Baldassini (1972) and the more famous Villa Brody in Greve in Chianti (Florence, 1973), characterized by large windows and the intersection of open and closed spaces, in a happy insertion into the landscape.
Author of the interiors of several stores for Salvatore Ferragamo, he began designing furniture for Acerbis in 1975 with the Life modular storage units, which were joined by tables and sofas in the same collection. Other projects include the Galassia wall system (1976), Matrix storage units (2003) and Quadrivio tables (2005).

Acerbis Large Moodboard Coffee Table in White Marble & Dark Stained Walnut Top
By Acerbis, Massimo Mariani
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A system of small tables with a top made by freely combining different contrasting materials: wood, marble, shiny metals, giving life to a mosaic of materials differing by type, color nuances, texture and thickness. Rectangular or square, the tables can also be freely combined with each other to form large coffee tables with an ever-changing material and graphic effect. A polished metal tray, the thickness of which is designed to match perfectly with the different thicknesses of the table tops, can be added as a valet or utility tray. Dark matte grey painted support structure and feet. Table shipped disassembled.
Finishes:
- Wood tops, thickness 30 mm, Swamp Oak or Swamp Ash
- Marble tops, thickness 15 mm, white arabesque or grey graphite, matte finish
- Tray, thickness 15 mm, in polished steel or brass
(*) Swamp oak and Swamp ash
Special veneer identified as a ''fossil'' since obtained from trunks found below ground, where they have been preserved under layers of clay for hundreds of years. The anaerobic environment inhibited the growth of microorganisms preventing the inexorable process of slow decay. On the contrary, over time the internal elements are transformed and others have been added: the mineral salts are combined with those present in the wood matrix, slowly transforming the organic state. This long natural process, which cannot be replicated, gives the wood a unique, precious appearance, with surprising colors and textures. The aging of the wood can also cause the formation of cracks and splits which are puttied and repaired but not eliminated during processing, because they are the signs of time that provide evidence of the great age and uniqueess of the material.
Born in Florence, Massimo Mariani lives and works in London. He studied architecture with Giancarlo De Carlo at the University of Genoa. After graduation he joined Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Genoa and later Herman Hertzberger...
