“Macchiaioli” Occasional Table with Terrazzo Top by Montaperto Studios, 2023
About the Item
This is a unique table with an asymmetrical walnut base design of four straight tapered legs, crowned by a dynamic mixed stone terrazzo top. The base for this design was inspired by the furniture of Mario Bellini, a giant of 20th century design who was a ceaseless experimenter, breaking norms and establishing a new canon of avant-garde constructions and forms.
The unique shape of this piece makes a challenging and engaging work to live with, as one moves around the piece expecting simple symmetry, there are numerous trompe l'oeil moments, as the eye expects to find oft-repeated and boring angles and proportions, only to be pleasantly surprised by the daring—almost jarring—physics and poise of the design.
This table was designed and produced in Brooklyn, NY by Montaperto Studios, a father and son design team consisting of Angelo and Justinian Montaperto. Drawing on inspiration from across the great canon of historic design, we produce the timeless, novel and ancient, with one foot in the past and one in the future—forging the creative synthesis of the present.
