About the Item
Matthews and Parker Custom Tour Eiffel Table After Jean Royère, ca 2005
This beautiful cocktail / coffee table is a classic modern design custom made in a size requested by the previous owner. It has a bronze frame with a brushed brass and stainless steel grid and clear glass insert.
Jean Royère was 29 when he decided to quit his job and take up design. He began his second career in Paris’ cabinetmaking workshops, before receiving his first big commission, designing a new layout for the Brasserie Carlton on the Champs Elysées in 1934. From then his luxurious style caught the eye of the world’s elite, and he spent the rest of his career designing couture furniture and spaces for the likes of King Hussein of Jordan and the Shah of Iran. Unlike the modernists who came before him, the self-taught designer offered a more sensuous approach to design. He reveled in color, working with rich jewel tones, precious materials, velvets, brass, and satin, with shape and material as his only ornamentation.
Royère first introduced the idea of the crossed bars joined by spheres in 1939. However it was not until his 1947 exhibition at "La Résidence Française" in 1947 where he showed a lamp and a low table of this design that the shape was clearly defined. At the French consulate in Alexandria, Egypt, Royère furnished an entire room in the "Tour Eiffel" style. Source: Sotheby's
