About the Item

Dirk van der Kooij, 2014 Recycled plastic, pigment, stainless steel fixtures The Meltingpot table offers a third life to recycled plastic prototypes and colour tests from the Kooij studio. Daily, our in-house colourist composes a table from precious, fleeting resources. As such, each piece is a one-off interaction between intuition, material, and chance. Pressed from studio prototypes and colour tests, the tables are completely solid—with patterning enveloping the top, edges and underside of the table. Every Meltingpot pattern is unique. Dirk van der Kooij is a Dutch designer renowned for transforming recycled plastic into “forever furniture.” Beginning in 2009 at the Design Academy Eindhoven, he experimented using six welded pizza ovens to melt plastic resulting in his “Elephant Skin” series, celebrated for its rich, tactile surfaces. His Amsterdam studio combines artisanal craft and proprietary machines including presses, robots, and extruders to reshape waste materials like fridge interiors, CDs, leather sofas, and chocolate molds into durable home objects. Signature pieces include the 3D‑printed Chubby and Endless chairs, Melting Pot tables, and RvR seats each unique, functional, and joyful. His work emphasizes sustainability, circularity, and transparency in design you can literally see how each product is made. Today, his furniture is part of permanent collections in MoMA, the Stedelijk Museum, and London’s Design Museum, showcasing a pioneering vision at the intersection of ecology and innovation.
