About the Item

Mid century British teak and glass Astro coffee table designed by Victor Wilkins for G Plan in the 1960s / 70s. This restored piece is the oval shape which is harder to find. This piece has a solid teak base (inspired by Isamu Noguchi ) complete with its original glass top. This is the quintessential G-Plan coffee table of the 1960/70's and it's design and form are still as relevant now as they were when they were first produced. Designed in 1966 and launched the following year, the range – which was G-Plan’s most successful range – included a suite of furniture for almost every room in a house, all finished in teak with beautiful, rich grain. The design itself combined the sleek and sculptural aesthetic of Italian furniture with the definitive Scandinavian style that was so popular at the time. E Gomme LTD was established in 1898 in High Wycombe, and thanks to the launch of the G Plan brand in 1954 it went on to become one of the UK’s largest and most popular furniture manufacturers. Despite the true G-Plan Astro table not being designed until the late 1960s, the 8040 is often referred to as Astro by retro furniture fans. The 8040 was designed by Wilkins and sold in the mid 1960s The design was a hit and was followed by the 8050, with its oval shape, in 1969. Original glass This vintage item has no significant or visible defects, scratches, marks etc and the original glass is also in very good used condition (no noticeable marks).
