About the Item

A rare and charming example of Dutch Mid-Century Modern design, this compact side or coffee table—Model No. 535—was created by industrial designer Wim Rietveld and produced by the pioneering firm Gispen in the 1950s. Nicknamed the “MUG” or “Mosquito” table for its spindly black enameled metal frame and slender, angular legs, the table reflects Rietveld’s refined, functionalist approach and his keen eye for structural economy. Wim Rietveld, the son of Gerrit Rietveld, carried on his father’s modernist legacy through pragmatic, affordable designs for the masses, often produced in collaboration with Dutch manufacturers like Gispen and Ahrend. Gispen, one of the Netherlands’ most important 20th-century design houses, was known for combining industrial processes with elegant minimalism in postwar furnishings. This table features a new glass top paired with a black enameled metal tray below—both in comparable condition. The original metal frames show visible wear and patina consistent with age and use. Priced individually. Two available.
