About the Item

Handsome vintage modern coffee table with dark faux wood lacquered edges and legs, black lacquered waterfall style corners, and a black leather (possibly goatskin) top insert. The bottom of the table bears the prestigious leather tag signed by Karl Springer. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. This table has been restored. Multiple nicks and dings to the finish have been filled and painstakingly touched up to match the original finishes. It then received an overall buffing and a new clearcoat. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1990. This is a GORGEOUS rectangular rather Parson’s style coffee table comprised of beautiful dark finished faux wood framework, with black lacquered modified waterfall style corners connecting straight square legs, a black leather (but since it’s Karl Springer…it could be goatskin!) top insert, and it’s signed by Karl Springer himself! Parson’s style is such a classic design that dates to 1930 when French designer Jean-Michael Frank decided he was going to design a table that was simple enough that it could fit into any home regardless of style preference. Contemporary, mid-century modern, or modern, Parson’s style tables just work anywhere. And this take on that original design is done impeccably by and signed by Karl Springer!!! Does it get any better?? We think NOT!!! It is going to be wonderful in your living room across from your sofa or in the family room adorned with books, foliage, artwork, or a sculpture. This coffee table is much like “that little black dress.” Simple, luxurious, sultry, and it just looks amazing! Karl Springer was born in Berlin 1931 and immigrated to the U.S, in 1957. He settled in New York with hopes of becoming a bookbinder. He began working for Lord & Taylor flagship store on Fifth Avenue and quickly became top window designer for them. In the evenings he applied his unique skills to creations of decorative items covered in fine leathers, skins, and other exotic materials and developed a design collection of leather accessories. With the support of his friend, he was able to place his line in a prestigious specialty shop within Bergdorf Goodman. The line was an overnight sensation. He opened an atelier on East 53rd Street and it’s been rumored that The Dutchess of Windsor discovered him and threw him into stardom. People were captivated by his creations and charming personality. He quickly began taking on larger and more important commissions and he developed a network of craftsman always demanding the highest quality of materials and workmanship. He met Mark Eckman who was a young designer with a line of Lucite and lighting, and they began a lengthy collaboration. His brother joined the business, and it rapidly grew to a full furniture line, but the company ceased production in 1992. Mr. Springer passed away in 1991. He was honored with a one-man show at New York School of Interior Design in 1994. The Berlin-born, New York–based designer Karl Springer brought a chic, high-fashion sensibility to his coffee tables, mirrors, Lucite lamps and other furnishings. During his heyday in the 1970s, Springer’s work was a favorite of the glamour set, who enjoyed the novelty of pieces finished in rich and striking materials that ranged from exotic hides and skins to lacquer and chromed metal.

In a sense, Springer was a pre-postmodernist. Much as the dull, safe, corporate sameness of late 20th-century modernism prompted Ettore Sottsass, Michael Graves and others to explore new and provocative structures and materials in design and architecture, so, too, was Springer driven to enliven his creations with fresh and alluring energy and sleekness.

Springer came to New York in the late 1950s and found work arranging window displays at the department store Lord & Taylor. He had studied bookbinding in Germany, and, using his meticulous skills, he began crafting desk accessories wrapped in leather as a sideline. These pieces were sold in luxury stores like Bergdorf Goodman and drew a sophisticated clientele that included the Duchess of Windsor.

By 1965, Springer had established his own Manhattan atelier. It was Pierre Scapula, decorator to Jackie and Aristotle Onassis, who spotted Springer's disco-era Onassis chairs — which didn't yet have a name — first commissioned for a private residence in Acapulco, on the floor of the designer’s East 61st Street showroom. Jackie ordered barstools for the couple’s yacht, the Christina O, and dining chairs for their house on the Greek mainland.

At the time of his death, Springer had showrooms as far afield as Los Angeles, Tokyo and Munich.

The chairs, tables, credenzas and other furniture forms Springer created are generally simple, but substantial, and often have robust, rounded lines. The appeal of his work lies in Springer's insistence on exacting construction and, above all, his eye for unusual materials and finishes.

Springer employed Lucite, brass, and gunmetal along with chromed and polished steel, and revived exquisite finishes rarely seen since the days of Art Deco masters such as Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Jean-Michel Frank: shagreen (a type of sharkskin), python, goatskin, bone, horn, and lacquered parchment, as well as fabrics that include batik prints. Made of such materials, Springer’s work is by its very nature flamboyant and eye-catching: a suite of pieces will astonish, and an artfully placed side table in exotic hide will add a surprising spark.
