About the Item

Stunning coffee table handmade by striking mosaics signed by "Genaro" and stamped with the made in México. Legs are made in solid mahogany wood. Genaro Alvarez was known for his modernist mosaic creations in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The Genaro Alvarez Studio was located in Mexico City, where he created mosaic furniture, wall hangings, and decorative furnishings. Genaro was a Diego Rivera pupil. All his work was handmade using natural rocks, semi-precious stones, and glass mosaic. He was accredited with developing a new concept on the manipulation of glass mosaic as an art expression. In the late 1950's, he was commissioned to create the mosaic floor for Hallmark in Kansas City, Missouri. This estate sale find is an original Genaro Alvarez mosaic. It is set in a black wood frame. The mosaic measures 19.5" x 19.5", with the 1/2 wide frame, it measures 20.5" x 20.5". It too is made of various vibrant pieces that unite to create a striking mosaic, suitable for many decors. It is signed in the lower left corner Genaro and stamped on the back, Hand Made in Mexico by Genaro.
